Which sizes are official?
Read the status column before you trust a number. Official figure means the help page stated it. Not an official single size means we are refusing to invent one. LinkedIn’s row is a range, so the table does not pretend there is one recommended square. YouTube’s channel picture renders at 98 pixels in the branding article, while 800 pixels belongs to the artist-avatar article. Those are not the same claim.
Use the link in the last column for the long version, the mock, and the button that sets the editor. The machine-readable copies are platform-sizes.json and platform-sizes.csv. The methodology page explains how a row gets updated.

How do I pick one file for several profiles?
Start from the official constraint you actually have. LinkedIn’s cited page is a range, from 400 by 400 up to 7680 by 4320, under 8 MB, PNG or JPG. YouTube’s branding article says the channel picture renders at 98 by 98 pixels, and a separate artist article names 800 by 800. A 512 PNG sits inside LinkedIn’s range. It is not YouTube’s render size, so export a second file if you need the smaller square instead of scaling in the upload form.
For Discord, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, and X, the table’s general recommendation is 512 because those help pages did not give a profile pixel size we could store. Do not let a uniform column of 512 convince you the companies agreed. They did not. The status column is the correction.
What matters more than the pixel count?
The circle hides corners, and the avatar is displayed small. A 2000 pixel file with the subject in the corner loses to a 256 pixel file with the subject in the middle. Use the preview strip. Put the face inside the inner safe square described on the geometry page.
File type is the other constraint that is sometimes official. LinkedIn’s cited page wants PNG or JPG and not GIF. YouTube’s branding article allows JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG, and it says no animated GIFs, with a file that should not exceed 15 MB. The platform page repeats the limit next to the source link.
How fresh is the table?
Each row has a last verified date. The build warns when a date is older than 180 days, which is a prompt to re-read the help page, not a promise that the size flipped overnight. If a source disappears, the honest edit is to clear the official number and say so.
Open in the tool from a platform page when you want that row’s size selected. A general recommendation still sets 512, and the button’s note says it is not the platform’s spec. Recheck the source before you publish a size guide of your own.
How should I read the chart?
The best size for circle profile picture is the number the company’s own help page prints, not a single square copied onto every row. Where that page is silent, this chart marks 512 as a general recommendation. Download the JSON or CSV if you need the same table in another file. The date on each row is when Circle Crop Image Team last opened that help URL. Use the best size for circle profile picture from the row you will actually upload to, and ignore a chart that has no source link.
Frequently asked questions
Why are some sizes missing?
The official help page did not publish a single pixel size. The row says so.
Is 512 always safe to call official?
No. It is this site’s suggestion unless the source names that square. LinkedIn’s row is a range, not a single official size.
Where is the YouTube 800 figure?
On the artist avatar help page, for official artist channels. The branding page instead says the picture renders at 98 by 98.
Can I download the table?
Yes. platform-sizes.json and platform-sizes.csv are generated from the same data as this page.
Do you invent sizes to fill gaps?
No. Gaps stay labeled as a general recommendation.
How often is it checked?
The date on each row is the check. Older than 180 days is a warning in the build, for the editor to re-verify.
